Overview

Nusano

Position Summary:

Nusano has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Beam Physicist with over 20 years of experience to lead a team of physicists and engineers in our mission to produce radioisotopes for medical and industrial applications at our onsite facility in West Valley City, UT. The Nusano’s normal conducting linear accelerator will accelerate protons, deuterons, helium, and lithium ions to energies upwards of 12.5MeV/u with average beam currents of 3 mA average current, 20 mA average macro-pulse, and >1A peak current. The ideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge in the design, development, and optimization of particle accelerator beamline components and systems, ensuring the highest standards of performance and reliability. This role requires a deep understanding of RF engineering, vacuumsystems, beamline optics, and control systems, along with a proven track record of leadership and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

What You'll Do:

  • Lead the development and implementation of beamline physics
  • Collaborate closely with the Mechanical, Electrical, Targetry, and Controls Engineering teams to support the development of industrial, high-current accelerator components
  • Develop the methods for fast switching magnets to service multiple beamlines and target stations
  • Lead research into advanced high-density plasma systems for ion sources
  • Drive breakthroughs in novel techniques and methods for radioactive isotope productions and purification for medical and industrial applications
  • Investigate space charge effects for high brightness hadron beams
  • Develop scalable technology platforms for production operations
  • Document simulations, designs, and workflows to ensure ideas can be fabricated into real physical parts and machines
  • Oversee and assist with all accelerator component procurement and commissioning

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Physics or a related field with 10+ years in accelerator or beam physics
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and leadership abilities
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Knowledge related to the design, simulation, development, and commissioning of high-power RF systems and RF based hadron accelerators.
  • Hands-on experience commissioning, tuning, and upgrades to beamline equipment
  • Experience leading groups of scientists and engineers
  • Deep understanding of beam diagnostics, timing systems, and safety systems

Preferred Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Physics or a related field with 20+ years in beamline physics.
  • Experience with RF based hadron accelerators (RFQ, Alvaraz DTL, beamline optics and diagnostics)
  • Experience with charged particle optics simulation software to calculate emittance, trajectories, energy, power distribution, and time of flight
  • Experience in installation and commissioning of normal-conducting accelerators and beam lines
  • Experience writing component specifications for procurement proposals
  • Experience with development of new enrichment technologies critical to beamline and targetry operations
  • Leadership researching advanced high-density plasma systems for ion sources and mass spectrometry
  • Prototype development and testing

Physical Requirements:

  • Work to be conducted in both an office environment and the production facility
  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time. Frequent use of a computer with repetitive use of keyboard, mouse, and manual dexterity
  • 4-8 weeks of travel per year for vendor visits and other Nusano locations
