Position Summary:

 

Nusano has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Opto-Mechanical Engineer at our Salt Lake City Utah facility. This Opto-Mechanical Engineer will work with the Mechanical Engineering team to support the Nusano R&D team with the design and testing of advanced technologies for isotope production as well as research and development of a heavy ion linear accelerator, beam diagnostics, beamlines, solid and gaseous target stations, and radiochemistry equipment and machinery. To execute these projects, we are looking to add talented people to the team who are mission-driven, provide diverse perspectives, and who have demonstrated exceptional results through a range of different pursuits. This team member will be primarily responsible for close collaboration within the Development & Engineering (D&E) team carrying out critical engineering tasks as well as opportunities to optimize component designs and processes.

 

Responsibilities

What You'll Do:

  • Design, develop, and integrate opto-mechanical assemblies and systems including vacuum chambers, optical beam delivery systems, and their associated alignment
  • Collaborate with other team members including physicists, engineers, and technical support staff, across different facilities and locations to develop designs for complex new devices requiring innovative designs
  • Present project results and designs and respond to questions concerning engineering design and operations
  • Perform optical and mechanical (structural, thermal, vibrational, etc…) analyses of designs
  • Create and maintain technical documentation and models related to opto-mechanical design (CAD and optical models, drawings, analyses, BOMs)
  • Define and execute experiments to determine the best approach to meeting design requirements
  • Define and execute test plans to qualify and evaluate the performance of equipment
  • Create documentation specific to the project functional, design, and safety requirements as well as instructions for proper usage of the product or equipment
  • Work with vendors and internal resources to fabricate, assemble, and validate components and systems
  • Perform with a safety mindset at the forefront of all 

 

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics, or related field
  • Related professional work experience (7+ years)
  • Proficient knowledge of optics and laser optics (3+ years)
  • Knowledge of optical design software (ZEMAX or similar, 3+ years)
  • Hands-on experience with assembly and testing of opto-mechanical components (3+ years)
  • Design, integration, and operation of high or ultra-high vacuum systems and vacuum chambers (2+ years)
  • Demonstrated understanding of mechanism design, structural analysis, heat transfer, and thermal analysis, and ability to apply these to solve engineering problems (2+ years) 
  • 3D CAD Design and drafting in SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM or equivalent (2+ years)
  • Ability to supervise and safely direct activities of small teams of technical personnel
  • Ability to interact and communicate efficiently with researchers, engineers, designers, machinists, and engineering technicians to provide a high level of customer service
  • Demonstrated analytical thinking and rapid learning
  • Fully proficient with digital productivity tools (Microsoft Office products)

 

Preferred Requirements:

  • Master’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Optical Engineering or related field
  • Experience working with various laser systems: CW and pulsed, free space, and fiber coupled
  • Experience in designing custom high or ultra-high vacuum chambers
  • Experience integrating precision opto-mechanical systems into facility and system design
  • Technical experience with knowledge and competence in some of the following areas:
  • Kinematics, linear motion stages, linkages, pneumatics, and mechanism design
  • Welding, machining, and mechanical assembly processes and techniques
  • Proficiency with FEA software, preferably ANSYS mechanical
  • Metrology, inspection, quality control, and test methods related to manufacturing
  • Experience in designing for and working within radiation environments
  • A drive for learning new things related to engineering job functions
  • GD&T and P&ID proficiency within ASME Standards
  • Experience working with a quality program and quality standards

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Work to be conducted in an office environment, laboratories, engineering R&D, and/or production environment
  • Must be comfortable working within radiation environments
  • Participate in activities that require following extensive safety precautions and use of protective equipment, e.g., respirators and multiple layers
  • Frequent use of a computer with repetitive use of keyboard, mouse, and manual dexterity
  • Must be able to lift, push, and/or pull a maximum of 50 pounds
  • Ability to work sitting and standing for extended periods
  • Ability to stoop/bend, squat/crouch, kneel, climb, work at/above shoulder height with both hands, use both hands/arms for strong grasp and either hand to turn or twist
  • Ability to ascend or descend ladders, scaffolding, ropes, poles and the like
  • Ability to travel across Nusano sites
