Position Summary:

 

Nusano seeks an Ion Source Engineer to support the development and commissioning of a high-power/high current linear accelerator. Nusano is building a normal-conducting linac to accelerate various ions which interact with targets to produce radionuclides for medical applications. The Ion Source Engineer will be responsible for assisting in the commissioning of various accelerator systems, particularly the ion source and beam diagnostics. The Ion Source Engineer will conduct experiments to characterize and optimize beam production for the system including data acquisition, analysis, and reports detailing the results. This position requires on-site work in Valencia, CA where the ion source is currently installed. This position will be expected to relocate (with full company support) to Salt Lake City, UT, where the full production facility will be.

Responsibilities

What You'll Do:

  • Work with researchers, engineers, and technicians to install, commission, and qualify various ion source systems
  • Participate in experimental work to fully characterize and optimize the ion source and related subsystems
  • Collaborate with researchers and engineers to identify and realize means to improve mechanical, electrical, and controls systems for the ion source and its subsystems
  • Create operating procedures and training materials
  • Oversee operation and maintenance of the ion source during production

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or immediately relevant field
  • More than five years of experience with hands-on experimental work
  • Extensive experience with the operation of high vacuum, high voltage, and magnet systems
  • High proficiency using SolidWorks or equivalent for 3D modeling and 2D prints
  • Experience reading electrical drawings and modifying circuitry based on schematics
  • Experience collecting, processing, and presenting scientific data
  • Comfortable working with multidisciplinary teams

Preferred Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or immediately relevant field
  • Experience with ion sources and/or accelerators
  • Experience with RF systems and superconducting magnets
  • Familiarity with the EPICS control system

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to regularly lift up to 20 pounds, occasionally lift up to 50 pounds
  • Must be comfortable working in a facility that produces radiation
  • Work to be conducted in both an office environment and the production facility
  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time. 
  • Frequent use of computer with repetitive use of keyboard, mouse, and manual dexterity.
  • Must be able to work in the presence of strong magnetic field
  • 2-4 weeks of travel per year for visiting Nusano’s research facility, visiting vendors, and attending conferences
